Phones, DVDs, Internet

Here is some info on phones, dvd's, and internet. (from Liz and the 2009 blog)

As for cd's and dvd's, i brought both. I play my dvd's on my computer or else you have to buy an international dvd player to play multiregion codes. Most of the teachers use their computers to watch dvd's and if you use the program VLC, that is free on the internet, you can watch dvd's from any region. As for cell phones, wait until you get here as it is very easy and we will help you get set up. Internet is the same in Italy as in Toronto. You have to call the internet company and set up an installation appointment for them to come and give you equipment. The school helps you do this as the company only speaks Italian. You have to pay for the internet so you can decide what plan to get.

  1. As far as electronics are concerned, remember that we have 220 volt electricity in Europe. That means that any electronic equipment from N. American must use a built in or external step-up converter. Moreover, it is my understanding that in addition to a different current, we have different cycles here in Europe, which means that equipment run on a voltage converter tends to burn out over time. Keep in mind that most or all laptops have a built in voltage converter and work effectively anywhere.

  3. Hi Day,

Quick question about cell phones. I was considering purchasing an unlocked phone in Toronto and then buying a card in Milan. Are cell phones cheap in Italy? Should I wait to buy my phone when I get there? Thanks.

  4. Yes, an unlocked GSM phone will work in Italy, but make sure that it is GSM and will work in Europe. The frequencies used in N. America and Europe are different. You can buy cell phones in Italy starting at about Euro 60-80. You can buy an Italian SIM card with a whole variety of different service options.
