Blue Cross Emergency Medical

Hi Day,

I called Blue Cross and told them I would be travelling to Europe for an indeterminate amount of time at the end of August. They quoted me at $444.00 for 212 days of coverage. Does this amount sound about right to you?

  1. Yes, this sounds about right. Is 212 days the max. length of coverage? If they will extend it to a whole year, do so. Find out it if is renewable.

  2. Hi Day,

212 days is the max amount of time that an insurance companyb will cover you without an extension of your Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP). If you extend your provincial health coverage, which I did for a year, they will cover you for the whole year, however the cost of a plan for an entire year is more than $500. I got a quote of about $700 for the entire year (They charge about $2.04 a day). All I have to do is call them from Milan after the end of the 212 day period and they will extend my coverage. I extended my OHIP and bought travel insurance with TIC emergency medical for Canadians as it was slightly cheaper than Blue Cross. $430 vs $444.00 for 212 days. Hope all is well.

  3. Great information. Teachers, take note of Rod's research. This would appear to be the best way to proceed.
